Outdoor EV Charger Installation: Choosing the Right Location for Ontario Winters

A driveway charger needs a spot you can reach after a snowfall, not just a convenient wall in summer. To plan an outdoor EV charger installation, send Kiyan Electric photos of your parking area through our free estimate form. Tell us where you park and where snow is usually cleared or piled.

Check the equipment's outdoor limits

Before buying a charging unit, read its installation instructions for outdoor use and operating temperatures. A covered location does not make indoor-only equipment suitable for the driveway. Ask the installer to review the exact model, including any outlet or connection it uses.

Our guide to choosing equipment for your vehicle is useful background. For the connection itself, read our comparison of hardwired and plug-in chargers. Neither connection method replaces the need for suitable outdoor equipment.

Leave room for snow clearing

Look at the driveway as it is used in January. Will a snowbank block the charger? Could a shovel, snowblower, or plow strike it? Discuss those routes with your installer before settling on the mounting position.

Allow for the way you park when the driveway is narrower after clearing. The cable should still reach the car without lying across the walking route or being stretched tight.

Watch where water and ice collect

Point out downspouts, roof runoff, and spots that often freeze. Avoid choosing a position simply because it is closest to the car. The installer also needs to consider the mounting surface, wiring route, and exposure to water.

Keep the connector stored as the manufacturer directs. If you notice damage, stop using the equipment and ask for advice rather than trying to seal or repair it yourself.

Compare a wall mount with a separate post

A wall may work well beside a garage. A post may make more sense for a parking space farther from the building, but it can add work such as a base and underground wiring. Ask how the equipment will be protected from vehicles.

Our guide to understanding an EV installation quote explains what to clarify about the proposed work. Check whether digging and surface repairs are included.

Plan cable storage for cold days

Cold weather can make handling the cable less comfortable. Follow the equipment instructions for bending and storage, and do not force a stiff cable into a tight coil. Choose a holder location you can reach without stepping over stored cable.

Never pull the vehicle away while it is connected. Make unplugging and storing the connector part of your routine before leaving the driveway.

Include the electrical assessment in the plan

An outdoor location still needs a review of the home's electrical supply and planned charging demand. If available capacity is a concern, ask whether EV load management is an option for your installation.

Discuss any required notification and inspection arrangements too. Our article about EV charger permits in Ontario introduces that conversation.

Share the full driveway layout

Include photos showing the parking space, the proposed mounting area, and the route back toward the house. Photos of the closed electrical panel can also help; leave its cover in place. Mention shared access or property-management approvals that may affect the job.

For the wider planning process, see our home charging guide. Kiyan Electric can discuss an outdoor layout that takes your parking routine and winter access into account.
