Installing an EV Charger in a Detached Garage: What to Plan For

A detached garage can be an excellent location for a home EV charging station, but installing the required electrical infrastructure may be more involved than in an attached garage.

The distance between buildings, underground wiring requirements, and available electrical capacity all influence the installation design.

KIYAN ELECTRIC INC provides residential EV charger installation services across Richmond Hill, Toronto, Vaughan, Markham, and surrounding GTA communities. Homeowners can request a project-specific estimate before proceeding.

Evaluate the Garage Electrical Supply

Some detached garages have only a basic lighting and receptacle circuit. Others have a dedicated feeder and electrical subpanel.

Before installing a Level 2 charger, an electrical contractor must determine whether the existing electrical supply can accommodate the additional load.

An existing garage receptacle does not automatically mean the garage is ready for EV charging.

Underground Wiring and Trenching

If a new feeder or dedicated circuit is required, underground wiring may be an appropriate solution.

The project can involve excavation, approved conductors, conduit, physical protection, and suitable burial depths.

The correct installation method depends on the site conditions and Ontario Electrical Safety Code requirements.

Underground utilities must be located before excavation begins.

Consider Wiring Distance

A garage located farther from the house generally requires more electrical materials.

Longer circuits may also require additional consideration of conductor sizing and voltage drop.

The route may need to avoid driveways, landscaping, patios, and underground services.

Choosing the Charger Location

The charging station should be positioned where the cable comfortably reaches the vehicle.

Consider garage doors, storage cabinets, walking areas, and the possibility of adding another electric vehicle.

If the garage is unheated, select equipment suitable for the expected temperatures.

Plan for Future Garage Equipment

A detached garage may eventually contain heating equipment, power tools, or a second charging station.

Discussing these plans with your electrical contractor can help determine whether a garage subpanel or another electrical arrangement is appropriate.
