How Far Can an EV Charger Be Installed from Your Electrical Panel?

The distance between your electrical panel and EV charging station can influence installation cost, conductor sizing, and the wiring method. Although many homeowners prefer the charger near their parking space, the electrical panel may be located in a basement, utility room, or another part of the property.

KIYAN ELECTRIC INC provides EV charger installation and dedicated electrical circuit services throughout the GTA. To discuss your wiring requirements, request a free estimate.

Is There a Maximum Installation Distance?

There is no single universal distance limit for every EV charger installation.

The practical distance depends on circuit amperage, conductor size, voltage drop, installation methods, and site conditions.

A charging station installed 100 feet from the electrical panel may be feasible, but it can require a different wiring design from one installed only 10 feet away.

Why Voltage Drop Matters

Electrical conductors have resistance, which produces some voltage loss as current travels through the circuit.

Longer wiring runs can increase voltage drop, particularly with higher charging currents.

An electrical contractor evaluates the circuit design and selects suitable conductor sizes.

The Actual Wiring Route May Be Longer

The shortest straight-line distance is not always the route that electrical wiring can follow.

Conductors may need to pass through finished ceilings, basement framing, garages, or approved raceways.

Structural obstacles and existing building systems can influence the final installation route.

Detached Garages and Outdoor Parking

When charging equipment is located away from the main building, underground wiring may be necessary.

These installations can involve trenching, conduit, underground utility locates, and appropriate physical protection.

An existing garage subpanel may sometimes be used if its feeder and available capacity are suitable.

How Distance Affects Pricing

Longer installations generally require additional electrical materials and labour.

Other cost factors include wall access, conductor sizing, trenching, and electrical panel capacity.
