EVEMS, or Electric Vehicle Energy Management System, is an option that may help manage the electrical demand created by an electric vehicle charger. Understanding EVEMS
Electric vehicles require electrical charging equipment that can represent a considerable electrical load. Before installing an EV charger, it is important to determine whether the existing electrical system has adequate capacity.
EVEMS technology is designed to help manage this demand. Rather than treating the EV charger as an isolated addition to the property, the system considers electrical consumption and can regulate the charging load when required.
This can be useful for properties where electrical capacity is limited.
How EVEMS Helps Manage Electrical Demand
An EVEMS can monitor electrical consumption and control the EV charging equipment based on the conditions of the electrical system.
For example, if several major electrical loads are operating at the same time, available capacity for EV charging may be reduced. Depending on the equipment and installation design, the EVEMS can temporarily interrupt or manage charging until electrical demand decreases.
The DCC-12 is one example of an EVEMS product. Manufacturer documentation describes it as a system intended to permit EV charger connection where the electrical panel might otherwise require additional capacity.
EVEMS and Electrical Panel Upgrades
An EVEMS does not automatically mean that every property can avoid an electrical panel or service upgrade. A qualified electrician must evaluate the installation and determine whether the proposed solution is appropriate.
The electrical service size, existing loads, charger requirements, panel configuration, wiring, and applicable electrical requirements all need to be considered.

EVEMS solutions can be considered for residential homes, apartment buildings, commercial offices, schools, supermarkets, facilities, manufacturing plants, and other properties.
For commercial and industrial installations, load calculations and project requirements may be more complex, particularly when several EV chargers are planned.
