DCC ( Demand Charge Controller)
What Does DCC Mean?
The term DCC can have different meanings depending on the electrical product or application.
For the DCC-12 EV charging product, manufacturer documentation identifies the equipment as an Electric Vehicle Energy Management System, or EVEMS. Earlier documentation also describes it as a charge controller for electric vehicles.
Therefore, when discussing a DCC-12 installation, it is important to identify the specific product rather than assuming that every device called DCC operates in exactly the same way.

DCC equipment is commonly discussed in connection with EV charging and electrical load management. Kiyan Electric Inc. is a licensed electrician and electrical contractor company with $5 million dollars liability insurance, WSIB, and a Master Electrical License. Kiyan Electric Inc. is approved by the Electrical Safety Authority and provides residential, commercial, and industrial electrical and lighting services throughout Ontario.
DCC-12 and EV Charging
The DCC-12 is designed to manage electrical demand associated with EV charging.
According to the manufacturer, the system can allow an EV charger to be connected to an electrical panel that may otherwise have insufficient capacity for the charger.
The equipment monitors electrical demand and can temporarily interrupt EV charging when the configured electrical threshold is exceeded.
How Load Management Helps
Consider a home with a limited electrical service and several large electrical loads. Adding an EV charger may create additional demand.
A load management system can monitor the electrical system and control the EV charger according to the available capacity.
When other electrical loads decrease, EV charging can resume according to the equipment's operating settings.
DCC-12 Electrical Configurations
Current DCC-12 documentation identifies 240/208V single-phase applications and lists main power supply options from 60A to 200A. The compatible EV charger breaker depends on the main supply configuration.
This means the correct configuration should be selected based on the actual electrical installation rather than simply choosing a DCC based on the name of the product.
Professional Installation
DCC-12 installation involves electrical connections, current transformers, configuration, and testing. The manufacturer's installation documentation states that current transformers are used to monitor the main power conductors and provides specific installation instructions.
A licensed electrical contractor should complete the installation.
